MANILA, Philippines – A raid in a suspected drug den in Marikina turned bloody on Thursday when a man was killed in an exchange of gunfire with agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency as he tried to elude arrest.

The raid was conducted by anti-narcotics operatives who received a tip from an informant who said that the house in Barangay Sto. Nino, allegedly owned by a certain Mike Balagtas, was being used as a drug den.

The raiding team entered the house after receiving a pre-arranged signal from an undercover PDEA agent who pretended to buy shabu, or methamphetamine hydrochloride.

At least eight suspects were arrested after they were caught in the act of inhaling shabu. They vehemently denied using the drug.

After a thorough search of the premises, the operatives found a suspect hiding in a secret compartment of the house and armed with a gun.

As the suspect aimed the gun at them, the agents immediately sought cover, leaving the News5 cameraman in the room with the suspect.

Fortunately, the cameraman was not hurt.
